Flint Hill’s Fashion Magazine Returns

Categories:

Two of the best parts of the Flint Hill student community are its creativity and passion for a wide variety of subjects and the student-run organizations that help them explore these passions. Ranging from Science Olympiad to Math Modeling to the View itself, Flint Hill has the perfect option for any student to spend their afternoons working towards bettering their skills. One of the most unique clubs Flint Hill offers is the Cosmetology and Fashion Club, who focus on all things apparel and accessories. This year, under the leadership of seniors Grayson Morrill, Emily Chao, and Lily Forster, they are continuing to publish Flint Hill’s very own fashion and cosmetology magazine, something the club did throughout all of the past school year.

The magazine is titled Mode et Cosmetologie, French for Fashion and Cosmetology, and it will include articles and photographs concerning clothing, makeup, hairstyling, and many more related subjects. It is set to be published in a digital format, with students being able to access it through QR codes and links found in the slides of the Daily Report upon the release of each issue.

The most unique and exciting aspect of this project is the student-contributor aspect of it. Even though the Cosmetology and Fashion club is running and managing the publication of Mode et Cosmetologie, any student will be able to submit an article for review, editing, and publication. Using a link, which will also be available in the Daily Report once submissions are open, students will be able to send in their writing about any topic of fashion that interests them and have the chance to be included in the next issue. Students are also strongly encouraged to submit photographs and visuals along with their articles to reflect the appearance and aesthetics of the magazine, as well as improve the reading experience and comprehension of ideas in the inherently visual medium of fashion.

For any student interested in journalism, fashion, or both, submitting an article could be the opportunity to step into the shoes of a potential future career path. It also invites a wider range of perspectives on fashion, allowing the magazine itself to provide a more comprehensive view of the apparel interests of Flint Hill.

The leadership of Mode et Cosmetologie, as well as the Cosmetology and Fashion Club as a whole, are highly invested in fashion and fashion journalism, allowing them to create the amazing writings and publications Flint Hill saw last year. Morrill attended an Oxbridge study abroad program on fashion in Paris, the center of the fashion industry, and she brings all of the skills she learned there to the magazine’s publication. “I believe Cosmetology and Fashion are important because it is an outlet for individuals to express themselves,” says Morrill of her motivations in participating in Mode et Cosmetologie, “Continuing with my interest in fashion allows me to use the skills I’ve learned to not only design clothes but also to style myself and others.”

A quick glance around Flint Hill’s hallways in between classes shows just how much the student body cares about fashion. The school is full of many distinct styles and aesthetics, with many students putting significant care and thought into what they put on before leaving the house every single morning. Mode et Cosmetologie provides these students with the ability to share their thoughts, as well as allowing them to read what their friends and peers think of the constantly evolving world of fashion, creating a community of ideas and opinions that has the capacity to add to everyone’s knowledge and expertise.
