October was breast cancer awareness month, and Huskies took the time to spread awareness and spark conversation about what we can do to help a large group of men and women who are currently facing breast cancer. Specifically, the student-led Breast Cancer Awareness club has worked hard to make an impact throughout October 2024.
I was able to interview Vice President and Junior Evie Huang, who told me, “Breast cancer is a common issue that tends to get overlooked. It’s the most diagnosed cancer for women, and it’s important that we start the conversation that leads to further research and care for those struggling.” There is currently a 1 in 8 chance of women in the U.S. developing breast cancer. 1 in 830 men develop cancer. These shocking statistics prove how many people are impacted by breast cancer.
But what can we do as students? One leader of the club, junior Brennan Lublin, told me, “We wear pink throughout October to honor those who have passed, acknowledge the people fighting, and celebrate the perseverance of survivors. We do this through sports events and creating hundreds of pins that Flint Hill students are wearing on their clothes and backpacks.” Taking a small amount of time throughout your day can make a big difference in someone else’s life, and we can use the month of October to remember this.
I was also able to interview the President of the Breast Cancer Awareness Club, Brooke Kearney, who told me, “We are lucky that Flint Hill provides us with the opportunity to public speak and make service announcements to the whole community through town meetings. Our club talked this month about statistics of Breast Cancer awareness in order to bring attention to the month and educate students on the best ways to respectfully converse and help the cause.” Brooke Kearney’s sister, Emily Kearney (Flint Hill class of 2023), founded the club to make a difference in a topic that is near to the sisters’s hearts, and Brooke has continued the impact.
As a community, we can work uniquely to lead with compassion and make an impact. Whether through spreading information, showing support, or volunteer service, the actions of young people make a difference. These huskies were able to use Breast Cancer Awareness Month to create action, which we can continue in future years.
