With October coming to a close, seniors across the country are celebrating the passing of November 1st— or the first major college application deadline of the 2024-2025 cycle. As a college preparatory school, Flint Hill prides itself on having some of the best resources available for students when applying to college. At the beginning of junior year, students are assigned one of four college counselors with whom they will be working to edit and submit applications for schools. While there are four different options to choose from, every faculty member of the college counseling department is incredibly qualified, having served in undergraduate admissions themselves before joining the Flint Hill community.
After speaking with the College Counseling assistant Ms. Kasey Lynn, about her role in the college counseling department and what makes it a fulfilling job, she had these kind words to offer: “I love the excitement around college application season. Although there can be periods of stress or disappointment during the process, it is very rewarding to know that each student will end up where they need to be and are excited about their futures.” Ms. Lynn is responsible for organizing over one hundred seniors and where they’re applying to. The college counseling department uses a system of green sheets or forms that students fill out to indicate when and how they’re applying to each college. Ms. Lynn then takes these green sheets and disperses them to every student’s respective counselors, thus initiating the application review process. When asked about the maintenance of this system, Ms. Lynn said, “It’s like a well-oiled machine! After refining the process over many years, our department has found a system that works well for us.” Nevertheless, Ms. Lynn recognizes that in an ever-changing college application world, things can get tricky at times. “The college application process is always changing, but use here at the college counseling department ensures to stay up-to-date and flexible for each new round of seniors.”
With the first major deadline complete, seniors look ahead to January for the regular decision cycle and the next schools on their lists. In other words, in a few weeks, the dreaded infection known as “senioritis” will soon plague the Class of 2025, and who can blame them? After completing each of their college applications by the new year, seniors merely have to wait until they hear back from their schools. It can be incredibly difficult to maintain motivation to do school work, especially when seniors realize their high school experiences are coming to an end and they want to make the most of their time with friends and family. All in all, applying to college can be incredibly stressful but with a whole department dedicated to supporting seniors and understanding peers, the Huskies of 2025 are ready to tackle the process– along with senioritis.
