As winter break approaches, many Huskies’ favorite Flint Hill tradition is here. The Annual Tip-Off Tournament is a student-wide favorite, kicking off December with school spirit. This tournament features the Girls’ and Boys’ basketball teams, both competing to win the tournament. Before the tournament began on December 6th, the student-ran Athletic Advisory Council hosted a spirited pep rally for the student body earlier that day. There were a multitude of activities and events during this event, such as various basketball competitions and a spectacular performance by the Flint Hill dance team. Students from different classes competed against each other to prove who was the best class. This event was a success and built anticipation for the beginning of the basketball season.
Next came the highly anticipated basketball games later that night. First, the girl’s varsity basketball team faced off against Forest Park High School at 6:30, crushing them 62-19. Senior Raigan McCalla had an outstanding performance, scoring 28 points. After the girls’ team scored their first point, the student body covered the gym floor with toilet paper in celebration and abrupting with cheers. It was an exciting moment in the Flint Hill tradition. After the first game finished, now it was time for the boys’ varsity basketball team to take the court! They faced off against a tough Springdale Prep team, playing hard the whole game but just coming up short in the end and unfortunately lost 83-94. However, after senior Caleb West scored the first basket with an assist from junior Ty Harris, the student section got to throw their second round of toilet paper onto the court in celebration. Overall, it was a very fun basketball-filled night at Flint Hill!
The girls’ team returned the next day to compete for the title, which they executed impressively, beating Trinity Episcopal 62-46. Overall, it was a great tournament for the Girls’ team, giving fans a glimpse of what to expect for the remainder of their season! The Boys’ team came back on Saturday with determination. They came out victorious against Sandy Spring Friends School, beating them 83-75. The Huskies showed a lot of ability and talent this past weekend, and we look forward to watching them compete as the season progresses. Finally, it was time for the All-Tournament awards. On the girls’ team, Senior Raigan McCalla earned All-Tournament MVP honors, and Sophomore Ashley Guiliani and Senior Tatum Carney earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. The Huskies are on track for a great season this year, and we can’t wait to see what they do!
