Golf is sometimes portrayed as a sport played by older individuals, but, at Flint Hill, this is not the case. Recently, Zachary Arnold, a junior at Flint Hill, created the Golf Club to build new relationships with peers and have fun playing a sport he loves. I interviewed Arnold to get insight into what made him start this club and how he brought the idea to life. He explained to me how he created this golf club and what building it would bring to the community. He said that he wants to “give students an affordable and easy way to play golf.” He also said, “This is a great opportunity to improve your game if you are interested.” I then asked Zach what his favorite part of the club was, and he responded, “Getting to see so many people who never played golf before and getting into it.” Zach is proud of his establishment and wants golf to grow in the Flint Hill community.
Things can get competitive in this golf club, as there are weekly rankings. The club works by choosing a partner and playing challenging matches against other opponents to move up in the rankings. Challenge matches are essential to increasing your team’s rankings. After each result is calculated, you will get an updated position on the rankings where you are. Rankings are released every weekend, so getting as many challenge matches as possible is essential to move up in the rankings. As a current Golf Club member, I look forward to my challenge matches, and so does my partner.
I also asked some other members of the Golf Club and what they have learned from it. One student-athlete said that he was able to bond more with his friends and get to know them better. Another student said they are in the club to improve at the sport. The Golf Club is a fun, easy and affordable way to connect with your peers while having the opportunity to have fun.
In addition, there is an app golfers can download called Youth on Course. Youth on Course is an app that allows you to play for five dollars at select golf courses around the United States. The average cost of playing nine holes at Oakmont Rec Center is about 27 dollars. But, with Youths on Course, you only need to pay five dollars to play nine holes. Another eligible golf course with Youth on Course is Burke Lake Golf Course. There, you can play a full 18 holes and only pay five dollars. The numbers add up, and you can save hundreds of dollars yearly if you join Youth on Course. All you need to do is fill out some information, and you will have the subscription for an entire calendar year. It is easy to fill out, and you save money as well.
In conclusion, golf can be such a great sport to learn and play. Once you learn golf you will never forget it!
