For over a decade, the Flint Hill volleyball team has been the pinnacle of high school volleyball nationwide. Year after year, the Huskies have outshined their competition on the court, winning numerous state championships and never dropping a set during their regular season. The level of prestige the Flint Hill volleyball team has garnered throughout these past years is unprecedented by any other sports team in the school’s history (perhaps only rivaled by Dennis Scott’s legendary basketball season in 1987). However, the immense amount of history and pride mounted on the girls’ volleyball team can put a great amount of pressure on our Huskies every year. Furthermore, there have been inklings of doubt amongst the team with the loss of last season’s starting lineup to graduation. Nevertheless, our girls have proved themselves once again Wednesday night in a nail-biting five-set win against Bullis.
From the very beginning of the season, Bullis stood out as a strong contender against the Huskies. Their team is stacked with a multitude of players who all compete at the highest level of club volleyball. Not to mention, their star all-around player, Alexis Ewing, (committed to Penn State), would prove to be some of their best competition yet. Our Huskies knew they would have to train hard to defend their number one title in the Independent School League. Yet, practice took a turn for the worse when senior starting outside Audrey Sealock sprained her ankle the evening before the game. No one could have blamed Sealock if she decided to sit this game out, but that’s not what she did. Sealock instead brushed aside the disadvantage her sprained ankle put her at and courageously chose to participate in the game, being there for her teammates and embodying the Husky core value of “blazing the trail.” “I just took a few Advil and tried my best!” She stated the week after the game. Between Sealock’s injury, the loss of the previous starting lineup, and the pressure to win, it seemed as if the odds were stacked against our Huskies’ favor. But despite all these factors that served as obstacles to our girls prevailing against Bullis, they still secured the win in an impressive display of perseverance and skill. This significant win marks the beginning of a new era in the Flint Hill girls’ volleyball team, one of greatness that will be up there with the past history of the team. We can’t wait to keep seeing our Huskies on the volleyball team continue to make us proud, and we hope they know that we will be supporting them all the way!
