On Wednesday, February 7, all female and nonbinary students of the Flint Hill Upper School were invited to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. National Girls and Women in Sports Day is an annual day of observance that happens the first week of February. It recognizes the achievements and influence of women’s sports as well as their progression over the years. To honor this day, the Athletic Department put together an hour-long event with guest speakers, a Q&A session, snacks, and more.
Two guest speakers were invited to talk about their personal experiences and journeys as athletes. The first guest speaker was Alex Long, a successful basketball player and Flint Hill alumni (graduated in the Class of 2012). The second guest speaker was Megan Shifflett Bachmann, who is currently the head volleyball coach at George Mason University. “I think that having the guest speakers there was really important to really just show leadership and the future of women’s rights, and just how women can feel empowered whether in sports, whether its school, anything really, women can rely on themselves and other women to lift each other up while doing what they love,” says Sophomore Cate Stanley. “Also, getting the same positions as men, coaching wise for example, and facing that adversity with unequal pay and different opinions and stuff, I just think it’s really important. I was really moved by it because I relate to all of this.”
Overall, the event was a huge success. Both guest speakers gave truly motivational speeches, and everyone at Flint Hill is looking forward to the next National Girls’ and Women in Sports Day in 2025.
