The Upper School’s 2023 Fall Dance production Kaleidoscope, A Celebration of Dance, was a huge success. “Kaleidoscope was very fun, and I will certainly have many positive memories from the experience. We all put a ton of practice and hard work into the show, which paid off in amazing performances from all my classmates,” says Sophomore, Elisabeth Morello. The upper school dance team performed Kaleidoscope twice in the Olsen Theater: first on Friday, November 10, 7:00-8:00 pm, then on Saturday, November 11, 1:00-2:00 pm. According to the Flint Hill newsletter, the show “uses live performance and film to display the fluidity and grace of classical ballet, the sharp edges of Horton, and the smooth flow of jazz dance techniques.” For those who missed the live performances, four short recorded films (“Sign of the Times” by Timothy Tang, “Shadow Play” by James Murphy, “Marley’s Dance” by Rachel Faino, and “Looking On” by Olivia Tan) can be found online: https://www.flinthill.org/kaleidoscopefilms/
Sophomore Nadia Ngata, one of the performers in Kaleidoscope, says, “If I were to describe Kaleidoscope in one word I would use thrilling. Something that’s really cool about it is the combination of different dance styles! We did a ballet piece, Horton, and jazz, as well as a dance team contemporary piece. My favorite part of Kaleidoscope, along with the dancing, which I feel just brought us all closer together, was the collaboration with photography students. Between each dance, we were able to have a film that showed different concepts and aspects of the dance program with different dancers and styles. I have to say each photographer just did a fantastic job. I love seeing the two departments come together, and it all made the show more special. Overall, it was a very fun experience, and I’m so glad to have had a part in it!”
Kaleidoscope was an unforgettable experience for performers and audiences alike. Flint Hill’s dance and artistic talent is undeniable, and we all can’t wait for the next dance production.
